Training Days / Training Sheepdogs

Frequently Asked Questions and Contact Us

Is this course for me?

Our Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Days are designed for:

  • Producers who would like to integrate working dogs into their current programme, to minimise stress on their livestock during handling.
  • Working dog owners who want to make the most of their new dog, or take their current dog to another level, either in their farming enterprise or for sheepdog trialling.
  • Our training is not suitable for people who just want their dog to have a fun, one-off day out. Once you awaken the working instinct you can’t turn it off.

How often are the Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Days held?

  • Training Days are held throughout the year dependant on demand, and avoiding busy farming seasons such as seeding, harvest and shearing. We usually aim to run them around February, July and November.

Where are the Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Days held?

  • At our farm near Strathalbyn, South Australia.

What is the basic format of the day?

  • It’s an all day course, including alternating theory and practical sessions. You learn the theory, then go out to practise what you’ve learned. All food is provided for the day.

How old does my dog need to be to come?

  • Ideally from around 3 months and onwards, but we can help at any age.

Which breeds do you cater for?

  • Our experience is in border collies and kelpies, which are known as heading dogs. Other breeds of working dogs (such as heelers) have different instincts and require a completely different approach.

Do I need any previous sheepdog or livestock experience?

  • No. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or if you already have some experience with dogs and livestock. Our Stage 1 training days are full of information, no matter what level you or your dog are at.

Do I have to have sheep at home?

  • No, but it definitely helps to have regular access to some kind of livestock, as your dog cannot develop stock skills without stock to work. They can work sheep, cattle, ducks, chooks, etc. Maybe you know someone else with stock, or you can train with a friend. You might meet someone at the training day who you could practise with.
